Behind the B-Vitamin Complex

What’s the story behind B-vitamins, and how do they work together to support your daily cellular energy?*

Behind the B-Vitamin Complex

When you wake up feeling energized and alive, it’s easier to check off your to-do list and enjoy the day, but sometimes it’s not as simple as getting a good night’s sleep or adding another espresso shot to your AM latte.

That’s where B-vitamins come in. You may be familiar with the benefits of Vitamins C, E, and D, but not so sure about the importance of B-vitamins. So what’s the story behind each B-vitamin, and how do they work together?*

Let’s break down the B-vitamin complex.

What are the B vitamins, anyway?

When we talk about the B-complex, we’re referring to eight B-vitamins: thiamin (B-1), riboflavin (B-2), niacin (B-3), panthothenic acid (B-5), pyridoxine (B-6), biotin (B-7), folate (B-9), and cobalamin (B-12.)

What do B-vitamins do?

One of the primary functions of the B-vitamin complex is helping support converting the food you eat into fuel and supporting cellular energy.* Separately, B-vitamins do everything from supporting healthy hair and nails (Vitamin B-7/biotin) and heart health (Vitamin B-6/pyridoxine) to supporting your muscle function (Vitamin B-3/niacin).* In short, each B-vitamin plays its part and works hard to support many of your body’s essential systems, making them a necessary addition to your daily routine.

Where are B-vitamins found?

One of the best sources of B-vitamins is leafy greens, like spinach and kale, and other green veggies. B-vitamins are also found in whole grains, meats, and dairy products. If you eat a healthy, balanced diet, it’s likely you’re getting lots of Vitamin B each day.

Who needs B-vitamins?

Everyone! B-vitamins are super important to your well-being especially because they support so many essential systems and processes.* Certain B-vitamins also play important roles at different life stages. For example, if you’re considering starting a family, you’ll want to take a prenatal vitamin with B-vitamins, especially folate (B-9) before conceiving; adequate folate consumption helps support your baby’s brain and spinal cord development in the critical early weeks after conception.* If you live a vegetarian or plant-based lifestyle, you’re likely not getting some of the B-vitamins that come from meat and dairy products, so you might consider supplementing with B-vitamins, in particular B-12.

Speaking of B-12. I’ve heard a lot about it. What’s the story?

B-12 is important because it helps your body produce red blood cells and DNA, supports nerve function, and helps support cell metabolism.* It’s also more common to have low B-12 status, especially if you’re elderly, vegan or vegetarian, or if you’ve had certain surgeries. If you think you may not be getting enough B-12, speak to your doctor.
